My 70th Birthday present.
Type 2 Diabetes hypoglycemia
I turned 70, thrilled to be celebrating life, feeling proud of the progress I had made, and excited about the future. A month later, I received a diagnosis that changed everything: type 2 diabetes — and experience low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).
When you live with a condition like this, it can feel like a sudden fork in the road:
One path is confusion, fear, and “What do I do now?”
The other path is a plan — education, daily habits, and support.
For me, the answer became clear: I’m not giving up. I’m learning, adjusting, and leading with intention.

How I got here (and what I learned along the way)
All my life, I carried extra weight. For years, I told myself I would “deal with it later.” Then I reached a point where I said, “Enough is enough.” On July 22, 2022 that decision changed my life. I was 3 oz away from 300 LBS. Staring at the scale, I looked and saw 297.7. I thought I was going to scream. After i got a hold of the situation I planned the best deficit calorie plan. Along with fasting for 14 hrs on/10 hrs off. I lost 118 lbs total and continue the regime every day> but what works for me may not work for you. Thats how I started Senior Slimmers. Each of us have a story. and the proper way to get healthy. Back then I was in my mid sixties now a few years later with the diagnosis it is just as important to adjust.
So now, I began making steady, sustainable changes. The scale started to move — slowly at first, then more consistently. I was thrilled to see myself in a size 12, feeling better in my body, and proud of what I was building: strength, consistency, and momentum.
Here’s what I’m prioritizing:
Balanced meals**: I aim to include protein and fiber so digestion slows down and glucose rises more gradually.
Carbohydrate awareness*: I’m paying attention to the *type and timing of carbs, rather than trying to “white-knuckle” my way through.
More non-starchy vegetables**: These add volume, nutrients, and fiber without flooding the body with quick sugar.
Healthy fats in moderation**: For many people, fats help meals feel satisfying and prevent overeating.
Protein at each meal**: This is key for satiety and for minimizing swings after eating.
Avoiding “surprise” carbs**: Sauces, beverages, packaged snacks, and “healthy” desserts can contain more sugar/starch than expected.
And importantly:
I follow my doctor’s recommendations.
I don’t adjust medications or fasting protocols on my own without medical guidance—especially since hypoglycemia is part of my picture.
2) Movement as medicine (exercise that fits real life)
Exercise is one of the most powerful tools for people with Type 2 diabetes. It can improve insulin sensitivity, help with weight control, and support overall metabolic health.
3) A glucose safety plan (because hypoglycemia matters)
When you’ve been told you may experience low blood sugar, safety becomes part of the lifestyle—not an afterthought.
